Cedar Rapids Xavier 52

Maquoketa 20

Class 3A second ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints proved to be too much for the Maquoketa Cardinals to stay with Friday night in Cedar Rapids.

The Saints piled up 627 yards on offense and held the Cardinals to 272 yards, giving them a comfortable 52-20 win.

The Cardinals did have some highlights Friday night. Connor Becker rushed 85 yards for a touchdown, and Caiden Atienza caught two passes from Kannon Coakley and returned them for touchdowns. One of the touchdown passes to Atienza was for 68 yards.

The Cardinals also played a mistake-free game against the tough Saints defense, recording no fumbles and no interceptions.

The Maquoketa Cardinals’ next game is Oct. 4 at Goodenow Field against Marion, and it is homecoming week.
