Caiden Atienza

Caiden Atienza finds running room on a kickoff return Friday night. Atienza had 63 return yards despite the Cardinal loss to Independence.

Independence 47

Maquoketa 7

The Maquoketa Cardinals football team could not stop the Independence Mustangs’ rushing attack during Friday night’s home game at Goodenow Field.

The Mustangs piled up 422 yards on the ground and seven touchdowns. The Mustangs’ Logan Schmitt rushed for 217 yards and five touchdowns on his team’s way to a 47-7 win over the Cardinals.

Kannon Coakley led the Cardinals on the ground with 12 yards, and Ryne Gruenwald caught 10 passes for 136 yards and one 64-yard touchdown.

The Cardinals started the game with three 3-and-outs, as they were unable to convert first downs. The Cardinals’ first conversion for a first down came on Gruenwald’s 64-yard touchdown catch and run. The Cardinals only managed nine first downs for the entire game.

The Cardinals lost some key players due to injury on the defensive side of the ball. Hopefully the Cardinals can shore up the run defense the rest of the season.

Maquoketa travels to Mount Vernon Friday night.
