The high school winter sports programs soon will be in full swing.
The Maquoketa Cardinals girls basketball team opened up the season Tuesday, Nov. 26, on the road at Williamsburg. The Cardinals then play their home opener Saturday, Nov. 30, against Davenport West.
For the season, the girls will play at home 12 times and away nine different nights. They play mostly every Tuesday and Friday with the varsity game starting around 7:30 p.m. during the regular season.
One week later on Tuesday, Dec. 3, the Maquoketa boys basketball team opens the season at home against Vinton-Shellsburg. The Cardinals will play 11 games in Maquoketa and 10 games on the road. Varsity will take the floor around 7:30 p.m. The sophomores start at 6 p.m.
The Maquoketa wrestling team only has three meets in Maquoketa; the remainder are on the road
The Cardinal wrestlers start the season Dec. 3 in Midland at 6 p.m. The wrestlers have seven Saturday meets on their schedule and six Thursday-night meets with a couple Tuesdays scattered in their schedule.
The Maquoketa bowling team is the last team to start competition. The bowlers only have three meets before Christmas break, starting Thursday, Dec. 12, at Monticello at 4 p.m. The bowlers’ home opener is Friday, Dec. 13, as Central DeWitt comes to town starting at 2 p.m.
