Ryne Gruenwald

Ryne Gruenwald makes the catch on a fly ball in the infield Thursday night against Vinton-Shellsburg June 20.

The Maquoketa baseball team recorded its second walk-off win of the year, defeating Vinton-Shellsburg in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday night.

The Vikings took the lead by scoring two times in the top of the sixth for a score of 5-4. The score was still 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh.

Cardinal Kane Kopp started the inning by getting hit with a pitch. Kannon Coakley grounded out, advancing Kopp. Jack Dostal turned on a pitch, hitting a double to left. The move scored Kopp with the tying run and advanced Dostal to third.

That play action forced the Vikings to pull the infield in for a chance at the plate.

Bryce Hansen hit a 2-2 pitch right to the second baseman. But, the second baseman mishandled the grounder, allowing Dostal to score the winning run and set off a celebration around the first base bag with Hansen and his teammates.

The Vikings took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game two. The Cardinals answered with two runs of their own. Kopp hit a single to right in the bottom of the first, then Coakley hit a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to tie the score at 2-2.

But the Cardinals would not score the rest of the game. Payton Mangler was the losing pitcher on the mound after the Cardinals’ defense committed 5 errors.
