The Maquoketa Cardinals girls basketball team traveled to Manchester on Friday and returned home with another victory on the Hawks’ floor. 

The trio of Cardinals scored in double figures, led by Nell Sybesma with 22-points, Autumn Dykstra netting 14, and Tenley Cavanagh chipping in 11. Sybesma recorded a double-double with her 22 points and 10 rebounds. Abbi Strathman also grabbed 10 rebounds. 

The Cardinals also shared the ball well, recording 17 assists on 22 made baskets. 

The Class 4A 12th-ranked Cardinals defense forced 12 steals and blocked five shots while committing 14 fouls. Cari Pickup was the only Cardinal with three fouls.

The Cardinals have two home games this week — Beckman Catholic on Tuesday and Benton Community on Friday.

The Easton Valley River Hawks girls team started the new year on the right foot by downing Cedar Valley Christian 56-17 on the road Friday in Springville. 

RaeAnn Carlson poured in 22 points and 11 rebounds to pace the River Hawks. Sarah Driscoll also scored in double figures with 11 points. 

The River Hawks scored 11 points in the first quarter, but picked up the pace in the second quarter, took a commanding 31-6 halftime lead, and never looked back.

The River Hawks defense recorded 24 steals and blocked eight shots on the way to victory. The team committed 18 fouls, and eight different players had two fouls apiece.

The River Hawks hosted Prince of Peace Tuesday at 6 p.m., and travel to Mt. Carroll Friday night.
