DES MOINES — The Easton Valley boys 4x200 brought home 5th-place medals from the Class 1A state track meet in Des Moines last week — the best finish in the school district’s existence.

The winning foursome were Kolton Murphy, Porter Fuegen, Aiden Gruver, Hudson Felkey.

“Placing 5th was not what we wanted,” Gruver said. “We thought we could place in the top 3 or better, but placing 5th is good. We cannot complain.”

“It was a big relief to bring the 5th-place medal home to Easton Valley,” Fuegen said. “Finishing in 9th in the 4x100 was a huge disappointment for us not making the finals. Coming in with a high ranking in the 100m we expected more out of ourselves.

“I was a little nervous at first with all the people and being on the big stage at Drake Stadium. But it still was a fun few days being with teammates and making state track,” Fuegen continued.

Easton Valley’s 100-meter dash runner Hudson Felkey said he was disappointed by his time of 11.69, which earned him a 19th-place finish.

“My goal was to beat (fellow EV runner) Kolton Murphy’s time,” Felkey said. “I was only a few tenths behind him for the school record.”

On the girls’ side of the oval, Maddi Klemme was the only Easton Valley girl who qualified for the state track meet, participating in the high jump. She also qualified for the state high jump competition two years ago.

Klemme said one of her goals was to at least jump higher than she did two years ago.

“I was nervous walking out to the high jump area, but once I got some practice jumps, I was better,” she said.

She cleared the first two heights (4-06, 4-08) with no problem then struggled at 4-10 before she cleared it. However, she could not get over 5-00 mark.

If she could have cleared the 5-00 mark she would have gotten an 8th-place medal,” according to Coach Mike Kelly.

But Klemme, who will participate in the high jump at Simpson College next year, maintained a positive attitude.

“I beat my height from two years ago which was a goal,” she said. “There are a lot of good jumpers out there who jumped a lot high than my personal best. I just wanted to beat my jump from two years ago and I did.”

State Cardinal runners top out with double-digit placings

The Maquoketa Cardinals sent four runners to the state track meet in Des Moines in four events: Adeline Bowman qualified for three events, including the 100m dash, the 400m hurdles, and the 800m sprint medley team. Reese Kuhlman participated in the 400m dash and the 800m sprint medley. Kacy Williams and Hope Meyer rounded out the Cardinals’ two state relay teams.

Bowman earned the top placing among the Cardinals, running the 100m dash in 13.10 for 12th place. She followed that with a 16th in the 400m hurdles.

Coach Tod Bowman, also senior Adeline’s father, said he was proud of her leadership. “She is not a vocal leader but a leader by her actions, in the weight room or on the track.”

Meyer’s nerves abated during warmups. “Our hand-offs were good; we practice hand-offs a lot every day at practice. Our time at state was close to our best time this season so we were somewhat satisfied placing 13th,” she said.

Kuhlman’s nerves kicked in at state, but kept the in check as she set her personal best in her 400m dash, finishing 14 in a tough field.

“Kuhlman is a hard worker and never complained about anything she was entered in, (and she) also is a very coachable athlete,” Coach Bowman noted.

Meanwhile on the Cardinals’ boys track team, Caiden Atienza placed 20th in the 100m dash and 22nd in the 200m dash.
