The Easton Valley River Hawks girls basketball team opened the season on the road against Bellevue Marquette Nov. 26. It was also the first varsity contest for the River Hawks’ new head coach Chad Gruver.
“It was a good opening game to see how his team stacks up against a top-five team in the state,” Gruver said, noting that Marquette is ranked No. 5 in Iowa Class 1A.
The River Hawks lost 43-33.
Easton Valley started slow, and the Mohawks’ three tall players keeping the River Hawks off balance. The Mohawks’ trio of bigs — Miranda Peters, Ellie O’Brien and Tori Michel — blocked four shots, but they also ran into foul trouble as the smaller River Hawks kept taking the ball inside and challenging them.
Sarah Driscoll led the River Hawks in scoring with nine points; Renee Hartung netted eight points. Hartung made two three-point baskets in the second quarter.
River Hawks RaeAnn Carlson and Sydney McNeil both pulled down six rebounds, and Driscoll had four steals.
The River Hawks have a busy week in the second week of the season. They traveled to Springville Tuesday, then host Starmont for the home opener Friday, Dec. 6, followed by another home game Saturday against Bellevue Comets.
