The Easton Valley River Hawks football season came to an end Friday night at the hands of the Don Bosco Dons on their home field. The Dons move on to the state semifinals in the UNI Dome.
The River Hawks’ high-octane offense was not hitting on all cylinders Friday night. Periodically, when senior quarterback Nate Trenkamp changed the play at the line of scrimmage, he and the receivers struggled to communicate. On several occasions, Trenkamp threw the football and no receiver was in the area.
The River Hawks started the game slowly; on their first two possessions the River Hawks went three and out.
And, the Dons scored on their first two possessions to take an early 14-0 lead.
Porter Fuegen got the River Hawks on the board late in the first quarter on an 8-yard run to cap off a 75-yard drive in the first quarter.
The River Hawks made some uncharacteristically bad plays both on offense and defense that they did not do all season. During the playoffs, playing perfect football is important. The margin of error is slim.
Trenkamp threw two interceptions, but neither were his fault; the ball bounced off players and ended up in the hands of the defense.
The mistakes continued as a rare Kolton Murphy fumble on the 5-yard line took away a scoring opportunity.
Trenkamp still completed 25 passes on 42 attempts for 301 yards and two touchdowns and those two interceptions. Murphy had another strong performance with 10 rushes for 118 yards and one touchdown. Cade Jargo caught seven passes for 100 yards and one touchdown.
