The Maquoketa Cardinals boys basketball team split the bill 1-1 last week.

The Cardinals won 53-52 on the road Jan. 4 at Mount Vernon, then lost to West Delaware at home 89-73. The Cardinal defense forced the Mustangs into 22 turnover and held them to just 10 points in the first half.

The Cardinals had a balanced scoring attack with Ethan Combs leading the way with 9 points. Carter Meyer, Tye Hardin and Max Keller all recorded 8 points.

Too many things went against the Cardinals Friday, leading to their defeat at the hands of the West Delaware Hawks.

Ethan Combs picked up his second foul at the 7-minute mark in the first quarter and picked up his fifth foul with 1:18 left in the third quarter.

The Cardinals were out-rebounded 36-23. They recorded only three offensive rebounds compared to the Hawks, who had 11. The Cardinals also had 20 turnovers in the defeat.

Kasey Coakley poured in 16 points while Ty Hinz chipped in with 13 points Mitchell Roeder recorded six assists.

The Cardinals play three games this week. Solon comes to town Jan. 11, then the Cardinals travel to Central DeWitt Jan 13. The Clinton River Kings come to Maquoketa Saturday, Jan. 15, with a start time at 3:30 p.m.

Lisbon knocked the River Hawks from the ranks of the unbeaten last Friday night, Jan. 7, downing the River Hawks in overtime 53-50 in Lisbon.

Both teams played good defense in the first quarter with the score 5-4 and Lisbon leading after the first. By the time they started the fourth quarter, the River Hawks were down 31-19.

The River Hawks came back, outscoring the Lions 23-11 to force an extra period.

But in the overtime session the Lions defeated the River Hawks, handing them their first loss of the 2021-22 season.

Reduced roster leads to two Cardinal losses

The Maquoketa Cardinals girls basketball returned from Christmas break with a short roster, which led to two losses.

The Cardinals have only 11 players on the roster and were without the services of Reese Kuhlman, Kacy Williams and Hope Meyer for the home contest against Mount Vernon Jan. 4.

That led to hardships for the Cardinals, according to head coach James Doepke.

“The WaMaC is a tough league, and only having a six-player rotation just puts us at a bigger disadvantage with the other WaMaC teams,” Doepke said.

The Cardinals shot only 35.8% from the field, making just 19 of 53 attempts and shooting just 26.1% from three-point land, making 6 of 23 shots

Tenley Cavanagh scored a team-high 21 points, making five three-point shots. Carley Davis chipped in with 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

The girls also played on Friday, Jan. 7, at home against West Delaware. Reese Kuhlman returned to the lineup.

The girls dug themselves a big hole to start the game. West Delaware opened with a 14-0 lead before Tenley Cavanagh got the Cards on the board with a three-point basket with 2:15 left in the first quarter.

By halftime, the Cardinals cut into the deficit trailing only 24-21, but that is the closest they could get, losing 51-48.

Again, Tenley Cavanagh led the Cards with 15 points. Carley Cavanagh chipped in 14 points while Jackie Miller scored 12.

West Delaware outrebounded the Cardinals 39-24, and the Hawks also made 14 of 25 free throws compared to the Cards’ 9 of 19 attempts. The free throws and rebounds helped the Hawks keep the Cardinals at bay.

The Cardinals have three games this week. They hosted Solon on Tuesday, Jan. 11. On Thursday, Jan. 13, the Cards travel to DeWitt, then end the week hosting the Clinton River Queens Saturday at 2 p.m.
