Freshman Aubrey Howell slides safely into second base for a double in the Cardinals’ first game of the season in Maquoketa May 24 against Solon.

TIPTON — The Maquoketa Cardinals baseball team got the 2021 season off on the right foot by sweeping a doubleheader 8-0 and 10-1 in Tipton against the Tigers.

Kannon Coakley sparked the Cards’ offense in the first game, collecting three hits in four plate appearances — two of those three hits being doubles. He connected for back-to-back doubles, reaching his 99th and 100th career hits for the fifth-year senior starter. Coakley has recorded 55 singles, 39 doubles, 4 homeruns, and 2 triples — the 19th player in Maquoketa Schools history to achieve this milestone.

The Cardinals pounded out 12 hits in game one against the Tigers. Junior Owen Powers shut out the Tigers on two hits, striking out eight and allowing three walks in the Cardinals’ season-opening victory.

Logan Skladzien relieved Powers in the seventh inning, pitching a scoreless inning, striking out one, and throwing only nine pitches in the inning.

Game two was almost as good as game one. The Cards pounded out 10 hits and scored 10 runs while limiting the Tigers to one run on just two hits. Kasey Coakley pitched the nightcap, striking out 11 hitters, allowing two hits (both singles), and walking three.

Skladzien pitched another scoreless seventh inning, again throwing 14 pitches, walking one, and striking out one.

Daniel Coyle, the Cardinals’ senior starting left fielder, connected at every at bat in game two to lead the Cardinals in hitting. Coyle also had two hits in game one.

This week the Cardinals played host to Clear Creek-Amana on Tuesday. On Thursday they travel to Marion for two games, then finish the week at the Anamosa Tournament starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 5.

Softball

The Cardinals softball team dropped both games on a twin bill against Solon (10-6) and (10-5) in Maquoketa on May 21.

The Cardinals scored four runs in the bottom of the first, but Solon kept chipping away before finally taking the lead in the top of the sixth.

Maquoketa scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in game two and kept building on it, scoring in every inning but one.

A few bright spots on the night included Jenna Wiebenga hitting her first homerun of the season and the third of her high school career.

Cardinals Coach Sara Nelson said she was “impressed how the girls swung the bats. We had a lot of hard-hit balls, but they were just right at people.”
