• Boys

The Maquoketa Cardinals boys basketball team went 1-2 on the court last week.

The Cardinals traveled to Dyersville Dec. 15 to start the week, dropping a close game 60-54. Then on Dec. 18, they defeated South Tama on the road 64-33, and ended the week with a 65-49 loss to Pleasant Valley.

The Cardinals gave undefeated Beckman Catholic all it could handle before falling by four points. Brady Digmann and Caiden Atienza led the Cardinals in scoring with 12 points. Right behind them was Max Keller with 11.

The Cardinals did not shoot the ball well, making only 3 of 18 three-point tries and going 11-18 at the free throw line.

The Cardinals were again plagued by foul trouble, committing 21 fouls and sending Beckman Catholic to the free throw line 26 times, where they connected 17 times. Beckman also made 7 of 20 from beyond the three-point line.

The Cardinals varsity boys and girls teams were scheduled to play Central DeWitt, however, the DeWitt boys cancelled, forcing coach Matt Hartman and athletic director Tom Gruenwald to scramble to find another team to play. The Pleasant Valley Spartans were willing to come to Maquoketa on short notice.

The Class 4A Spartans defeated the Cardinals 65-49. The Cardinals and Spartans were evenly matched in the first quarter before the Spartans pulled away in the second and third. The Spartans shot the ball well, draining 8-18 at the three-point line and making 7-9 free throws.

Maquoketa plays one game at home before the Christmas break, taking on Marion Tuesday, Dec. 22.

The Easton Valley River Hawks boys basketball team completed another successful week, finding themselves back in the Associated Press’ Top 10 ranking after defeating some talented teams.

Then, the River Hawks continued their winning ways with three more victories last week.

The River Hawks traveled to Calamus-Wheatland Dec. 15 and defeated the Warriors 64-43.

On Friday, Cedar Valley Christian visited Miles for a conference game that the River Hawks easily won 83-35.

Then on Saturday the River Hawks traveled to take on the underdog Starmont Stars, coming away with a 100-18 victory.

Kaleb Cornilsen led the River Hawks in scoring in all three games. Against CW he scored 23 points, against CVC 27 points, and against Starmont he poured in 41 points.

Cornilsen’s 41 points is a school record. He only played 18 minutes in the game due to the lopsided score.

The River Hawks have only one game this week, traveling to Clinton to take on Prince of Peace Tuesday. Then the River Hawks will be off for 10 days for Christmas break before they hit the hardwoods again.

• Girls

The Maquoketa Cardinals girls basketball team worked overtime but couldn’t come up with the win, falling 69-62 in double overtime to Beckman Catholic Dec. 15.

Multiple factors contributed to the double-overtime loss, according to coach James Doepke.

“We had plenty of chances to win the game,” Doepke said. “I made a mistake, we were in foul trouble again, and the girls just got tired. The rotation was off because CJ Yeager, and Tenley Cavanagh fouled out.” Both Yeager and Cavanagh are the primary girls who bring the ball up the court and handle the point guard running the offense.

The Cardinals girls picked up their first win of the season Dec. 18 in Maquoketa against South Tama.

Four Cardinal girls score in double figures led by Jackie Miller with 18, CJ Yeager with 15, Carley Davis with 13, and Madilyn Lemke with 11. Miller also led the team in rebounding with 12.

“We finally put some good offense and defense together in the same game,” Doepke said. “I am proud at how hard these girls play and practice hard every single day it was good to a W.”

The Cardinals hosted the Central DeWitt Sabers on Saturday. The visitors won 59-37.

The Cardinals did not shoot the ball well, going 0-14 from three-point land and scoring only 14-41 field goals for 34.1%. The Cardinals had 18 turnovers that did not help their cause.

Nobody reached double figures in scoring. CJ Yeager scored 9, with Addi Bowman chipping in 6.

The Cardinals played two games this week — a make-up game with Independence Monday and an away game at Marion Tuesday.

Easton Valley 40

The Easton Valley River Hawks girls evened their record to 4-4 for the season.

The week started off on a sour note as the River Hawks lost to Calamus-Wheatland 52-40 on Dec. 15.

The score was not the only loss the River Hawks suffered as Kaitlyn Kuhl left the game with an injury and never returned. Kuhl is a leading scorer on the team and leads the team in assists, steals, and blocks. She also brings the ball up the court to get the offense started.

Kuhl missed the remaining two games last week against Cedar Valley Christian, and Starmont on Dec. 19.

Despite being down a player, the River Hawks won the two remaining games last week.

Four River Hawks shared the scoring in Kuhl’s absents. Sydney McNeil and Renee Hartung poured in 22 points in the two wins, while Liviah Johnson scored 19 then 16 in the two wins.

The River Hawks have one game this week as they traveled to Clinton to take on the Prince of Peace Irish Tuesday before taking a 10-day holiday break.

Wrestling

The Maquoketa Cardinals wrestling team picked up two wins Dec. 15 in the Maquoketa gym. The Cardinals swept a dual meet with Tipton and Alburnett.

Weighing in at 132 pounds, Hunter Connolly was one of a number of Cardinals who picked up wins on the evening, but he was the only Cardinal who recorded two pins on the night.

Cardinal Lane Stender, at 220 pounds, won by a 4-2 decision and a pin in 1:29. At 138 pounds, Ivan Martin won by a 7-3 decision and a pin. Jaycob Thompson won by a pin and a forfeit. At 113 Sam Livermore won by a major decision 15-3 and a forfeit.

Ben Thines, Colin Grau, and Will Caes each recorded one pin, and Levi Livermore won by forfeit.

Head coach Colton Feller said that for the most part, his athletes wrestled “good.”

“But I still felt we left some points on the made by not wrestling smart,” Feller added, quickly noting that the Cardinal wrestlers wrestled with confidence and were aggressive on the mat.

“It starts in practice every day, just getting better and better and it shows how hard work turns in to success,” Feller said.
