The Maquoketa Cardinals football team got the boost in the arm it needed as the team defeated the Marion Indians 35-10 in the Cardinals’ homecoming game Oct. 4. The Friday-night victory stopped the Cardinals three-game losing streak.

The Cardinals defense showed up this week, allowing only one Marion field goal. The Indians also scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but it was meaningless against the Cards’ 35 points.

On a chilly homecoming night with the bleachers full of cheering Cardinals  fans, Maquoketa scored first with 4:50 to go in the first quarter. The Cardinals tried a successful surprise onside kick that Blayze Luna recovered to give the Cardinals solid field position.

After a Marion timeout, quarterback Kannon Coakley found an open Caiden Atienza for a 48-yard touchdown pass on a quick, one-play drive. The Cardinals scored two touchdowns in 11 seconds to take a commanding 14-0 lead and all the momentum they would need to come away with the homecoming victory.

Senior Ryne Gruenwald rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries. Coakley, a junior, also rushed for a touchdown and 97 yards. Senior Dixie Solomon, the 2019 homecoming king, recovered a fumble and ran it in from two yards out for the Cardinals’ final touchdown.

Coach Kevin Bowman said he thought his offensive and defensive line “should dominate the game” and they did as the running backs had big holes to run through most of the night.

The Cardinals travel to Center Point-Urbana Friday, Oct. 11. CPU is tied with the Cardinals with a 1-1 record in district play. Their overall records are Cardinals 3-3, CPU 2-4.
