The Maquoketa Cardinals football team finally lined up across from somebody other than teammates.
The Cardinals and the Northeast Rebels from Goose Lake played two 15-minute quarters Saturday evening, giving the coaches a chance to see their players operating at full speed and helping each team find the areas where they might need extra work leading into the first game of the season this Friday.
Maquoketa travels to Anamosa and Northeast opens at home against Camanche Friday night.
Meanwhile in Preston, the Easton Valley River Hawks scrimmaged against themselves Friday evening. Being an eight-man football team, EV has a difficult time finding someone to scrimmage that is both close by and that they don’t play in the regular season.
Last Friday’s scrimmage gave the offensive and defense enough snaps to see the positives and the negatives of plays to work on before the River Hawks open the regular season Friday at Dunkerton.
