Maquoketa Cardinals and Easton Valley River Hawks scored well, with Maquoketa 4th and EV 5th, in the Cardinal Relays April 30.

The field athletes scored in all events for the Cardinals as they have all year.

“Our field events have been strong for us all season,” said Head Coach Spencer Scar. “And it has not just been one athlete; we have multiple people score points all season.”

Tye Hardin won the high jump. Keelan Hoover finished 2nd in the long jump. The Cardinals’ Wyatt Schwenker placed 3rd and Teddy Koch placed 5th in the shot put. In the discus Collin Grau finished 2nd and Teddy Koch followed in 3rd place for the Cardinals. In those four events, the Cardinals scored 29 points.

Freshman Carter Meyer won the 400-meter dash while Caiden Atienza finished 2nd in the 100-open dash. Cardinals relay teams recorded one 1st place, three 3rd places, and one 5th place.

Easton Valley scored 18 points in field events and 38 points in running events. Aidan Gruver and Porter Fuegen finished 1st and 3rd, respectively, in the 200M dash.

River Hawks coach Craig Reuter said he changed his lineup slightly because one runner was sick and a few were nursing minor injuries.

Cardinal boys rolled past every WaMaC tennis team

The Cardinals continue strong play in the WaMaC Conference, according to Coach Carol Hammill.

“We have now defeated all of the boys’ tennis teams in the WaMaC,” Hammill said.

On April 27 the Cardinals traveled to play Camanche. It was the second time in two weeks these two teams tangled. Camanche won that meeting on a last-match tie-breaker.

The two teams were tied 4-4 again coming down to the last doubles match.

The team of Daniel Coyle and Brady Digmann played a great match, Hammill said. “They stayed focused and placed their shots well, and we won 10-8. It was an exciting finish to the meet.”

The Cardinals’ victory over Camanche was more than just a win. The Indians have been a power in tennis for a long time. The only other time that the Maquoketa boys tennis team defeated Camanche in a dual meet was back in 2003, Hammill said.

“We defeated them 6-3 during a double-dual meet on a Saturday in Dubuque. We defeated Independence 7-2 in the morning and then took on Camanche in the afternoon. We’ve come close several times since then, but Tuesday was the first time since 2003 that we’ve come out on top,” Hammill said.

The coach also said she was pleased with the team’s 3rd-place finish in the Camanche Invitational Tournament April 24.

“Everyone on our team won a medal in the doubles competition,” Hammill said. “We also won three medals in singles. Kaleb Whaley played very well and earned our only 1st-place medal for the day.”
