Ryne Gruenwald found

Ryne Gruenwald found an open seam and headed for the goal line for the Cardinals’ first touchdown of the season Friday night in Anamosa.

ANAMOSA — The Maquoketa Cardinals football season got off to a strong start thanks to the team’s ground game.

The Cardinals opened the season by kicking off to the Anamosa Blue Raiders. The defense forced a three and out and a Blue Raiders punt.

Then, on the Cardinals second offensive play of the game, Ryne Gruenwald burst up the middle into the secondary for a 63-yard touchdown run to give the Cardinals the early 7-0 lead. Cardinals Caiden Atienza and Taven Rich teamed up to sack the quarterback in Maquoketa’s end zone for a two-point safety to make the score 9-0.

By the time halftime arrived the Cardinals had built a 29-14 lead. Anamosa scored on two touchdown passes, the last one in the second quarter went for 98 yards on a busted play. The Cardinals almost tackled the Anamosa quarterback in the end zone again, but he got the pass away for the long touchdown.

In the second half, the Cardinals’ defense held the Blue Raiders scoreless till a late touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals rushed for 387 yards on 57 attempts. Kannon Coakley attempted only 13 passes and completed six for 34 yards. With the Cardinals’ running game being so strong, the Cardinals did not have to put the ball in the air much. Coakley led the Cardinals in rushing with a quiet 128 yards; Gruenwald also topped100 yards with 111.

The referees whistled the Cardinals for 10 penalties for 90 yards with most of those being false starts and holding penalties. The Cardinals held the Blue Raiders to just 43 yards rushing on 21 attempts. However, Anamosa had 217 yards passing on 10 completions in 26 attempts for a 21.7 average for completion.

The Cardinals’ next game is this Friday in Maquoketa against DeWitt, the first game in the renovated Goodenow Field.
