MANCHESTER — Maquoketa boys basketball team traveled to Manchester Dec. 18 for another tough early-season contest against West Delaware.

And for the second game in a row, the Cardinals came away victorious against a third-ranked team. They defeated Marion Dec. 14.

A.J. Becker once again led the Cardinals in scoring with 14 points, Macklin Shanahan contributed 11, and Kane Kopp chipped in 9.

Shanahan struggled at the free throw line Tuesday night, shooting just 3-8. He was 0-4 in the first quarter, but 2-2 in the fourth.

West Delaware leading scorer Derek Krogman, who averages 21.8 points per game, was held to a team-high 15 points, while Kyle Kelley shot a perfect 7-7 at the line for the Hawks.

The Cardinals took control of the game in the second quarter. Their smothering defense held the Hawks scoreless for the last six minutes of the second quarter and the first five minutes of the third quarter — a scoring drought of more than 11 minutes — which helped the Cardinals build a 10-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

The Hawks cut the lead to just two points with two minutes to go. But the Cardinals defense returned and held the Hawks scoreless the last two minutes to hold on for the 40-35 win.
