The Maquoketa Cardinals football team ran into an 0-3 Mount Vernon Mustangs passing attack that they could not corral.
The Mustangs passed for 358 yards and four TD passes. The Cardinals’ run defense only allowed 34 yards on 27 attempts.
The Cardinals’ 26-13 loss to Mount Vernon evened Maquoketa’s record to 2-2 for the season. Senior Ryne Gruenwald continues to be Mr. Reliable, gaining 76 yards on the ground in 11 attempts and catching two passes for 20 yards.
Junior Kannon Coakley threw two interceptions Friday night. Coakley only had two interceptions in the first three games this season.
Senior Abe Michel got back on the field to help shut down the running game after sitting out of last week’s Independence game with injuries. He again led the team in tackles with 7.5
The Cardinals look to shore up their defense as they travel to take on the third-ranked and defending 3A champions Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints Friday night in Cedar Rapids.
