Beckman Catholic 52

Maquoketa 37

The Maquoketa Cardinals boys basketball team lost a tough matchup No. 5 Beckman Catholic on Jan. 7.

The Cardinals played toe-to-toe with the previously top-ranked Blazers, trailing Beckman 22-21 at the half before ultimately falling 52-37. The Cardinals had a hard time slowing down 6-foot-5-inch Michael Keegan as he scored 20 points.

The Cardinals’ Connor Becker posted a team-high 14 points even though he battled through foul trouble most of the game. Clayton Widel came close to another double-double, as he scored 8 points and snagged 13 rebounds. The Cardinals have lost four games in a row, and in those losses they have not scored more than 42 points.

In the Cards’ two wins on the season, they scored in the 60s and the 70s.

The Cardinals’ Friday night game against Benton Community was postponed due to bad weather and will be made up Feb. 6.

The Cardinals hit the road as part of a boy-girl varsity double header Tuesday night in Central DeWitt. The Cards travel to Solon Friday.

Easton Valley 69

Prince of Peace 50

The No. 3 Easton Valley boys basketball team just keeps putting up wins.

The River Hawks defeated annual rival Prince of Peace 69-50 in Preston Jan. 7.

The win offered Easton Valley a bit of revenge by beating the team that ousted them in last year’s playoff bracket.

The high-scoring River Hawks are averaging 73.8 points a game as a team. Senior Jessen Weber leads the team in scoring averaging 19.4 points a game and Kaleb Cornilsen is right behind at 18.5. Cade Jargo comes in at 10.8 a game; Nate Trenkamp’s average is 9.5 points a game.

Hunter Holdgrafer is the other starter. While the River Hawks don’t look on him to score high point totals, Holdgrafer does other things on the court such as offering a strong defensive presence; that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. He’s also not afraid to take a charge.

The River Hawks’ game for Saturday against Sterling Newman (Illinois) was postponed due to bad weather.

The River Hawks traveled to Lisbon on Jan. 14 and will host Midland on Friday 17.

Statistics from the Jan. 7 Easton Valley game were not available at press time.
