Maquoketa’s Macklin Shanahan drops

Maquoketa’s Macklin Shanahan drops a shot from the lane between two Davenport West defenders Saturday, Dec.1, at the Davenport West gym. The varsity Cardinal boys now stand 3-0 for the season.

VINTON-SHELLSBURG — Both Maquoketa Cardinals boys and girls basketball teams started the young season with 3-0 records.

That has not happened since the girls started playing full-court 5-on-5 basketball in 1985, or at least as far back as 1980, according to Jack Marlowe, Maquoketa sports historian.

The boys hosted Independence in their home opener Friday night. The Cardinals started slow, turning over the ball on the first two possessions while Indy made its first two shots to lead 4-0.

But once the Cardinals got going they never let up, outscoring the Mustangs 19-11 in the first quarter and never looking back.

Macklin Shanahan recorded a double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds along with his 13 points.

The Cardinals had a quick turnaround playing Saturday afternoon at Davenport West. Maquoketa played a boys and girls quad Dec. 1 with the JV girls starting it off at noon followed by the JV boys and both varsity teams.

Abe Becker scored 20 points Saturday afternoon. Caiden Atienza had 18 and Shanahan chipped in 12 points.

Both teams played tough man-to-man defense all night. The Cardinals were 31-38 for 81.6 percent at the free throw line. Davenport West pressured full court, forcing 21 Cardinals turnovers to West’s 23. West scored 16 points off turnovers.

West committed 27 fouls compared to Cardinals 13. Cardinals recorded 17 assists on 22 made baskets.

The Cardinals next play Friday at South Tama and Dec. 11 at home vs. Mount Vernon.

DAVENPORT — The Maquoketa Cardinals girls basketball team traveled to Davenport West Saturday and remained perfect on the season, coming away with a 65-25 victory on the Falcons’ home court.

Nell Sybesma led the girls with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Brie Bennis chipped in 18 points playing just over three quarters.

Coach James Doepke called off the dogs early in the third quarter, giving the starters a little rest. Doepke played 12 girls in the game, giving them playing time for future games when having more experience might make a difference.
