Kahlan Baker took the Maquoketa Marlins swim program to a new level over the weekend.
She became the first Marlins swimmer to earn first place in state competition, swimming the 50 backstroke in 42.48.
Baker and eight other area YMCA swimmers competed in the state YMCA swim meet in Marshalltown March 2-3.
The Marlins team, including Baker, Ellie Cagle, Morgan Millsap, Izzy Hopson, Kylie Nguyen, Thomas Wiebenga, Cameron Zimmer, Jackson Lewis and Tanner Burken, finished 13th overall.
Baker led the charge, finishing 1st in the 50 back, 3rd in the 50 free with a time of 35.75, and 4th in the 25 butterfly with a time of 18.07.
The 8 and under girls 100 free relay team of Baker, Kylie Nguyen, Ellie Cagle, and Morgan Millsap finished in 4th place with a time of 1:15.
Baker, Cagle, Wiebenga and Zimmer all made qualifying times in individual competition and will go on to represent the Maquoketa YMCA Marlins swim team in regional competition at the Des Moines YMCA Aquatic Complex on March 16-17.
Coaches Kayla Hopson, Dave Gossman, Korey Schepers, and Scott Warren said they were elated with the team’s performance.
Warren said the Marlins sent more kids to state and finished higher then ever before in the history of YMCA swimming program in Maquoketa.
Hopson said she was proud of all the Marlins swimmers.
“After working hard at practice for four months, to be able to finish as well as they did was a great accomplishment,” she said.
