Iowa sportswriters tap six local athletes as tops in football

The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association, with assistance from the Iowa Football Coaches Association, announced its all-state football teams for 2020.

This year’s teams were selected safely in the COVID-19 pandemic through a virtual meeting held Nov. 22.

Easton Valley senior Porter Fuegen was named to the eight-man first team in the DB position. Fellow EV seniors Kolton Murphy and Hudson Felkey were named to the third team in the RB/FB position and OL position, respectively.

Midland’s Iziek Soper was named a top DL on the eight-man third team.

Bellevue High School junior linebacker Jacob Waller took second-team honors in Class A.

Maquoketa High School senior Caiden Atienza was named to the Class 2A third-team for the WR/TE positions.

Football players catch eyes of area newspapers

The 2020 Quad-Cities All-Eastern Iowa football team and 2020 Telegraph Herald All-Area teams were announced.

Honored by the QC Times were:

First-team offense: quarterback Conor Gruver, Easton Valley High School, junior; Back Kolton Murphy, Easton Valley senior; WR Caiden Atienza, Maquoketa High School senior; OL Grant Michel, Maquoketa senior; OL Hudson Felkey, Easton Valley senior

First-team defense: LB Andin Farrell, Easton Valley junior; LB Connor Becker, Maquoketa senior; DB Porter Fuegen, Easton Valley senior

Second-team offense: WR Carson Fuegen, Easton Valley sophomore; OL Lane Stender, Maquoketa senior; OL Cael Koob, Maquoketa junior; UT Kannon Coakley, Maquoketa senior

Second-team defense: DL Parker Olson, Easton Valley senior; DL Daken Kramer, Easton Valley senior; LB Hayden Felkey, Easton Valley, sophomore

2020 Telegraph Herald All-Area first-team selections include:

Caiden Atienza, Maquoketa High School senior, linebacker. His season stats include catching 40 passes for 524 yards and five touchdowns on offense; recording 22 solo tackles, four tackles for loss and one sack; and one kickoff return touchdown.

Jacob Waller, Bellevue High School junior, linebacker. His season stats include recording 49 tackles, 38 solo, with 13 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and a fumble returned for a touchdown on defense; running 111 times for 774 yards and six touchdowns with 20 receptions for 297 yards and three more scores on offense.

Record-setting year

Two Maquoketa senior Cardinals on the football team set school records in the 2020 season. 

Senior Kannon Coakley recorded 285 career pass completions and 803 offensive snaps.

Senior Caiden Atienza recorded 96 career receptions and 13 receptions in one game.
