The Easton Valley River Hawks played an unusual game Friday night in Preston, defeating Central Elkader 86-0. The River Hawks ran only 21 offensive plays all night; in a typical game, teams run an average of 50 to 60 plays. The River Hawks recorded nine touchdowns on those 21 plays. 

The Maquoketa Cardinals volleyball team got off to a good start for the season, going 4-1 in a tournament at Maquoketa High School Saturday.

ANAMOSA — The Maquoketa Cardinals football season got off to a strong start thanks to the team’s ground game. 

Second-year head coach Nicole Snyder said she likes the makeup of her Maquoketa volleyball squad. With nine seniors to lean on for leadership, two juniors should see a lot of court time, and three sophomores should contribute this season.

Attention hunters who would like to sharpen their wing shooting skills before dove, duck, or pheasant season, or anyone who just wants to shoot some clay targets. 

Now that it is the first week in August, all the sports for the school year 2018-19 are in the books. Maquoketa and Easton Valley sports will look for more success in the 2019-20 academic. 

 The Maquoketa softball team lost to the Western Dubuque Bobcats in district play at the Bobcats field Thursday, July 11, effectively ending the Cards’ season. 

The Easton Valley baseball team opened tournament play against an improving Marquette Catholic team. Saturday afternoon, July 13, in Calamus. The River Hawks scored first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead to the top of third.

Carlene Paul competed in the Iowa girls high school golf event May 28-29 in Ankeny. This is the second straight year Paul qualified for state golf. Last year the Maquoketa girls golf team qualified; this year Paul got in as an individual. 

The Maquoketa Cardinals girls’ softball season got off to a good start by sweeping a doubleheader from Center Point-Urbana Wednesday, May 22. It took the Cardinals three innings to shake off the cobwebs and get the offense going, falling behind early 7-0.

Maquoketa and Easton Valley track athletes put forth valiant efforts in the state track meet at Drake Stadium over the weekend despite a rain-drenched track and soggy conditions.
