Editor:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the individuals and businesses that helped to make our Summer Reading Programs at the Maquoketa Public Library a success again this year. Our theme of a Universe of Stories, with its focus on space might have been a good motivator, as it was a perfect tie in with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

I would also like to thank all the adults that brought their children to programs and kept them reading over the summer months. Remember, that reading over the summer does help children to be prepared for returning to educational pursuits in the fall.

I would like to give special thanks to the Friends of the Maquoketa Public Library, as they paid for several of our Terrific Tuesday programs that the kids loved: Hanson Family, DJ Ricky Rox, Chris McBrien, and Yoga & Mindfulness with Molly Schreiber. I also would like to thank the staff from Jackson County Conservation, who brought reptiles to share with the kids, Shannon McManus from I Smile, Ally from Carson Celebration of Life, with her trainer from K9 Comfort, Jason Rowan, and the Maquoketa High School Dance Team.

The Friends of MPL paid for our licenses, so we were able to offer Monday Movies for the kids during the summer. Our volunteers for the movies were Carole Janecke and Lorna Specht and they did a fabulous job of supervising the shows and cleaning the area and preparing drinks for each week.

We also had four donors that provided three bikes and helmets for special prizes for the children; they were: DuTrac Community Credit Union, Fidelity Bank & Trust, Maquoketa State Bank, and Walmart. Our other donors of prizes were: Amy Scheffer & Family, Blank Park Zoo (Des Moines), Casey’s General Stores, Inc., Emilie Daniels, Grand Opera House (Dubuque), Maquoketa Public Library, Maquoketa Sentinel-Press, and Voy 3 Theatre & 61 Drive-In Theatre. If you happen to be in any of the businesses listed above, please tell them “thanks” for being a supporter of the library.
