Have you ever been doing something, anything, but realized that you messed up? You started off on the wrong foot, and it just led you deeper and deeper into it the mess.

Well, as I was writing my column, I realized I was doing it all wrong. Thefreedictionary.com defines a newspaper column as an article giving opinions or perspectives, but I haven’t been doing that at all. Opinions not only come from the brain but also the heart, as if everyone reading this has some sort of heartfelt connection to it. I had to completely restart my article, and now it will be so much better.

Just as I started off wrong on my article, we started off wrong in 2020. If you have been watching the news, you would know that we lost basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven other people in a helicopter crash. Australia has been burning for more than 100 days, there is serious tension between the United States and Iran, the coronavirus is killing thousands of people, air pollution contributes to 9% of the deaths a year, and more.

All of this happened or is going on in 2020, and it is only the beginning of February. We started 2020 terribly, and we need to reboot.

Our world is so amazing, but we are making it worse each time we fight or throw trash in the road, every time we drive a car when we can literally walk a quarter of a mile, or every time we leave a light or water on. If you told me our world was perfect, I would say you are wrong. I would say it is false information and I would tell you to watch the news. This is getting out of hand, and we need to change this. We started off on the wrong foot, but we can still change if we work together and actually care because if you don’t care, why are you even reading this?

I believe our world is a ticking time bomb — so many things could go wrong. I don’t want to scare you or myself, so I won’t go into detail. The truth is, the world is a scary place, but if you can take care of it, it will be a lot more exciting. I’m not going to sit here telling you to recycle, use less water, and use reusable bags at the grocery store. Those are all great, but I don’t want to tell you that because I couldn’t tell you I do all of them. The truth is it is hard to do all that. Schedules are getting fuller and fuller by the minute with all the new extracurriculars. That’s not bad, it is good to keep us busy and active.

There are a few things I do that can help you be more aware of what is happening around you, that will motivate you to help the world a little more.

The first tip I have is to do some research. If you really want to know all the facts, research them. It opened my eyes so much after I started researching; it showed me that life isn’t all a fairy tale.

The final tip I have is to get engaged: watch the news, talk to people, and engage yourself in the whole process. It is so much fun doing this, and it will definitely teach you about the problems in our world.

We have started out on the wrong foot, and you may think it is hopeless, but we just have to hop on the other foot and persevere.
