Karen Elizabeth Penningroth, 78 of Nevada, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, at her home in Nevada.
Karen was born Jan. 6, 1943, in Maquoketa, Iowa, the daughter of Vincent Paul and Camilla May (Peterson) Beck. She graduated from Welton High School in 1961 and was united in marriage to Lloyd Albert Penningroth on Nov. 3, 1968, in Maquoketa. Karen attended beauty school in Clinton and worked as a beautician before going to work for the Jackson County Hospital as a nurse’s aide. Most of her life was spent helping Lloyd on the farm near Lost Nation and Bellevue.
Karen was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and gardening. Karen will be remembered for writing her special letters to family and friends. She especially loved to watch her grandchildren play sports.
Karen is survived by her husband of 52 years, Lloyd of Nevada; her children: Lynn (Mark) Rhodes of Nevada, Julie (Boyd) Ellis of Germantown, TN, and Vincent (Heather) Penningroth of Ankeny; her grandchildren: Mara Rhodes (fiancé Riley Kindwall), Hattie Rhodes, Maddie Ellis, Audrey Penningroth, Jackson Penningroth and Quinn Ellis; her brother, Randy Beck of Davenport; along with her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Gary Beck.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021, at Memorial Lutheran Church (701 11th Street) in Nevada. Family greeted friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Face coverings and social distancing will be required. Inurnment will be at a later date at Mount Hope Cemetery in Maquoketa. A celebration of life will be held in Maquoketa in the spring/summer.
