Dennis W. Schlung, 58, of Maquoketa passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2019, surrounded by family at his home in rural Maquoketa, Iowa.
A celebration of his life was held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 15, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation was held prior to the service from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Cremation has taken place and a private burial will be held at a later date.
Dennis Wayne Schlung was born on Sept. 19, 1960, in Wisconsin to Victor James and Norma Pauline (Sills) Schlung Sr. He grew up in Iowa and Texas and earned his GED. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Army. He married Cathy Ann Fultner on Aug. 23, 1980 in Maquoketa, Iowa. Two daughters were born to this union, Elizabeth and Rachel.
Dennis was an over-the-road truck driver, first working for Campbell Trucking in Preston and then for Green Truckline in Cascade, Iowa, until he retired due to ill health.
Dennis was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Maquoketa and the NRA. He enjoyed fishing, doing locksmith work and shooting at the gun range.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Cathy Schlung of Maquoketa, Iowa; daughters, Elizabeth (Robert) DeYoung of Mt. Vernon, Ill., and Rachel (Jerrod) Dotson of Miles, Iowa; six grandchildren, Zachary, Dallas, Caitlin, Michael, Ethan and Gabriel; his mother Norma Kaping of Oregon; and siblings, Vickie Howard of Oregon, Henry Schlung of Oregon, Peggy (Chuck) Williams of Oregon, Janie (Sonny) Lengele of Oregon, Opal Denton of Arizona, Victor (Robyn) Schlung Jr. of Washington, Lynn (Loretta) Lewis of Texas, Teri (James) Munson of Texas, and Nancy (Roy) Taylor of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father Victor and stepmother Lavon, and an infant brother Danny Schlung.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Dennis W. Schlung memorial fund has been established.
