UNEARTHING MAQUOKETA'S HISTORY

Façade remodeling began in downtown Maquoketa and made people reminisce about Pronto Pizza when construction work uncovered this advertising on the former pizzeria’s building in the 200 block of South Main Street. The owners’ daughter, Denise Schmitz Swanson, said her parents owned Pronto Pizza during the mid-1980s; her father traded his Lincoln Continental for the sauce and dough recipes, she recalled. Swanson and brother Bill worked there, cooking, delivering, and selling pizza by the slice during Octoberfest of Bands. The business later moved to a small building behind Waugh Tires on North Main Street, Swanson said.
