A Dubuque man has been arrested in conjunction with a theft at the Otter Creek gas station Feb. 6.
Chad Duve, 36, has been charged with allegedly stealing cartons of Newport cigarettes valued at $240 from the gas station at about 4:30 p.m. He is being held in Dubuque County Jail on charges from separate incidents, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, which noted that Duve will be returned to Jackson County when his Dubuque County charges have been worked out.
Store surveillance video of the Feb. 6 alleged cigarette carton thief showed a man with a light-brown beard, glasses, a white hoodie pulled over his head, and a black jacket.
According to 911 incident logs, a man wearing a hoodie and jeans left westbound on Bellevue-Cascade Road and got into a vehicle.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office turned to social media to help identity the person. Deputies posted surveillance footage on the department’s Facebook page and sought the public’s help to identify the alleged thief.
Deputy Corey Kettmann thanked the public on social media after Duve was charged in the incident.
“With nearly 8,000 followers and a reach of well over 100,000, social media has become an important tool for our office,” Kettmann wrote on the sheriff’s office’s Facebook page. “We personally don’t recognize every subject in every surveillance video we watch, but we’re always confident the good citizens of Jackson County and greater Jackson County will continue to provide us with good leads when we ask for their assistance.”
