Studying the watershed

Jon Hopson of the Maquoketa Public Works explains flooding issues and other ways the Maquoketa River affects the City of Maquoketa to a group of University of Iowa students as part of the Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities (IISC) project. The college students and their adviser visited Maquoketa, Cascade, Dyersville, and Manchester as they learned more about the Maquoketa River Watershed Management Authority and the river’s importance to the communities through which it passes. The college students spoke with a couple local businesspeople whose businesses rely on the river and the welfare of the watershed. The IISC students are working on a watershed management plan for the authority that includes cleaner water and flood management.
