Maizie Hosch, 6,

Maizie Hosch, 6, has a long road of recovery ahead of her after a lawnmower accident Sunday required doctors to remove her leg about 5 inches below the knee.

A 6-year-old Maquoketa girl is hospitalized with her leg amputated below the knee after a weekend accident.

Maizie Hosch slid down a slide into the blades of a neighbor’s lawnmower Sunday, May 26, according to the Hosch Family Fundraiser page set up on Facebook for her family by Erin Moore.

Hosch’s left leg required amputation about 5 inches below the knee, and toes on her right foot were also affected.

Hosch, the daughter of Jason and Chrissy Hosch, is now undergoing physical therapy at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, after being airlifted from Jackson County Regional Health Center. Her most urgent medical need now is keeping infection at bay, family said.

She is expected to be fitted with a prosthetic after several more surgeries, the webpage said.

The online fundraiser so far has raised thousands toward the family’s expenses. In a short video recorded two days after the accident, Maizie thanked everyone who had brought her presents and visited.
