Democratic candidate will stop in Maquoketa Monday

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will hold a meet-and-greet at 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 15, at Timber Lanes, 1005 E. Platt St. Maquoketa. The public is invited to attend and ask questions. Doors open at 3:15.

SUV stolen from strip club and driven into the ditch

A Monticello man is accused of stealing a vehicle from Shaker’s Club in rural LaMotte, then crashing it.

David Bauer Sterling, 33, of 20246 215th St., faces a felony charge of second-degree theft. Police found him about three hours after the crash, walking along Highway 52 near St. Catherine.

The Ford Escape had been reported missing from Shaker’s at 12:21 a.m. June 30. The keys had been in the vehicle, according to Jackson County dispatch logs.

About 15 minutes before it was reported missing, a witness had stopped to check on a driver, identified as Sterling, who was trying to drive out of the ditch near 291st Avenue and Highway 52. The witness reported that the driver was uninjured but very intoxicated, according to dispatch logs.

Sterling also faces charges for driving with a suspended license.

The raffle is a fundraiser for the Together We Build campaign, a joint project of the Jackson County Fair and Jackson County 4-H Extension Office to build a new office and community building on the fairgrounds.

Mayberry’s Home Appliance Center donated the refrigerator/freezer, microwave, oven, dishwasher, washer and dryer for the fundraiser.

The gun raffle includes a Henry .45/7 Golden Big Boy, Savage Axis XP with scope, Ruger .17 HMR rifle, Marlin Model 60, Remington 1187 shotgun, Ruger 350 Legend rifle, and a Remington 870 20-guage deer combo. 

Buy tickets at the fair or extension offices. The winner’s name will be drawn July 27 at the Jackson County Fair. 

Chicken barbecue scheduled for July 21 in Springbrook 

Sts. Peter and Paul Church of Springbrook will host chicken barbecue Sunday, July 21, serving 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Mass at the church will precede the feed at 10:15 a.m. An auction will take place at 1 p.m., and drawing for prizes will take place at 6 p.m.
