Two months have passed and still law enforcement awaits autopsy results in the case of a Maquoketa man who died during an alleged burglary attempt in Maquoketa.

Maquoketa Police Chief Brad Koranda said the autopsy has been completed for Richard Purcell, 44, who died March 18 at Jackson County Regional Health Center after what was an apparent burglary attempt, according to the police report.

Koranda said he is awaiting the results of that autopsy, which was to be performed March 20 at the state crime lab in Ankeny to determine the cause of death.

“The county attorney has stated that she will not be pursuing charges on this case and feels when we get the report the case will be closed,” Koranda said.

Dr. Clyde Overturff of Dubuque was awakened by a noise in his office shortly after 2 a.m. March 18, the police report said. He saw someone, later identified as Purcell, and tackled him to restrain him, according to a police statement.

During the struggle, Purcell “slumped over and stopped fighting,” which is when Overturff called 911, according to the release.
