A Timber City car

A Timber City car took first in the first heat race, getting the first final flag at the opening stock car races held on the quarter-mile Jackson County Fairgrounds track. Some 3,300 people attended the first-ever Maquoketa event in 1950. Talking over all the “firsts” are, from left, John Koontz, Al Ehl, Bob Moore, Laverne Koch and Bill Kuhlman. In the photo is the No. 95 car, the 1934 Ford that won the race.
