Barbara McRoberts, left, attended the Jan. 20 meeting of the Women of Chapter BX, PEO. Mary Ann Hayward, right, discovered the two women shared a common PEO sister from Burlington.

Women of Chapter BX, P.E.O. had the privilege of visiting with Barbara McRoberts, the great-niece of Carolyn Pendray, at their Jan. 20 meeting.

Pendray, a former president of Chapter BX, was the first woman in Iowa to be elected to the Iowa House of Representatives and the Iowa Senate. She was also the first woman in the nation elected as a state senator.

McRoberts, now of Burlington, told stories about her Aunt “Caddy” with whom she spent many summers in Maquoketa. She described Pendray as a beloved aunt, full of fun and spirit, not just a brilliant stateswoman.

McRoberts was pleased to meet local members with whom she discovered “connections.” She and Mary Ann Hayward found they share a common P.E.O. sister from Burlington.
